Game eliminates
Newark Reds

The Newark High School boys basketball team lost 74-73 to Geneva on Monday, in double OT.

The Reds' record is 19-3.

The game, played at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, was a thriller. In the final seconds of the game, Newark players put up four shots, trying desperately to score the winning bucket. But the ball would not go into the net.

In the game, senior Josh Herman had 37 points, Brent Burgess had 11, Jason Sloane 9, Justin Whyte and Dan Buck had six each. The game went into the second overtime when a Burgess 3-pointer tied the game at 67.

Herman and Burgess had three 3-pointers, and Buck and Whyte had two each.

Last Friday, Newark advanced to the semifinals of the Class BB Sectionals with a 65-49 win over the Victor Blue Devils.

The game was played at Newark. Newark jumped to a 6-0 lead and was on top 15-12 after the first period. Victor made a run to tie the game at 18-18 but Newark pulled away to take a 30-18 lead. Sloane nd Herman had 12 and 8 points in the first half.

Newark's defense in the first half was outstanding. "You need to contest every shot grab every rebound and get on the floor for all loose balls," said Coach Ron Ceravolo. "A number of players worked hard on Jamie McArdle the entire game," added Ceravolo.

Newark held a 45-36 lead going into the final period. In the fourth quarter, Buck hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 48-36. Whyte scored to make the score 50-36. Rich Fernandez followed with a jumper to make the score 52-36.

Ceravolo had great praise for his squad after the game with special praise to seniors Josh Herman and Rich Fernandez. "I thought they played their best games of their careers, but once again it was our depth and our ability to play ten players that made the difference." Fernandez led the Reds with 14 points with eight of those coming in the final period. Herman and Sloane added 10 points apiece. Whyte and Burgess added six points apiece. Herman dominated the rebounding with 12 rebounds with Shawn Oakleaf getting six and Sloane, four rebounds. Newark was 13 of 20 from the free throw line.
