Alex Eligh, Newark legend, dies at age 92

Alexander G. ElighAlexander G. Eligh died on March 1, 1999 at Geneva General Hospital. He was 92.

Alexander George Eligh was born on May 9, 1906, to Frank and Anna McDonough Eligh, in Brockville, Ontario Canada. He was one of eight children. In 1930, he moved to Rochester and in 1937, he became an American citizen. He had a special status in this adopted hometown, where he and his wife lived for 50 years.

In March 1948, his athletic and recreational experience landed him the position of assistant director at the Newark Community Center. Within a year, the former ice hockey player was the community center's director. He and Alice adopted Newark as their hometown.

The Newark Community Center carries his name, because of the love and devotion he gave to so many Newark children.

Alex Eligh was a member of St. Michael Church and the Newark Lions Club. In 1994, he was honored with the Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow Award.

In March 1963, Alex Eligh was named Man of the Year - a designation of outstanding community service. And in 1970, at a testimonial dinner, the name of the Newark Community Center was changed to the Alex Eligh Community Center.

Eligh retired from the Center in 1974, but had continued to give of his time and expertise.

Family and friends called at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 West Miller Street., Newark. A Funeral Mass is planned for today at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, 401 South Main Street, Newark with Father Peter Clifford officiating. Burial will be at White Haven Memorial Park in Perinton.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Alice Burke Eligh; sisters-in-law Emily Castledine of Ottawa, and Eula Burke of Brockville, both in Canada; and nephews, William (Susan) Eligh of Homer, NY; Jack (Nancy) Eligh of Macedon; and Willard (Mary Ellen) Burke, Jr. of Brockville. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews survive him, in the United States and Canada.
