Grand Slam Derby starts on April 1 The cure for the winter blahs is a fishing derby! The Wayne County Grand Slam and Merchants Challenge will start on April 1, so think about putting away the shovels, and bring out the fishing gear. This is the second year for the Challenge, which will run through Sept. 6. Last year, anglers took home over $8,000 in cash and merchandise. The Grand Slam part of the derby is the 5 species of trout and salmon from Lake Ontario -- coho, brown trout, lake trout, steelhead, and Chinook kings. Catch one fish of each species, add up the weights of those fish and you can be a winner. In the Merchants Challenge, anglers will be fishing for the warm water species; pike, perch, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and walleye. Total weight of the five largest fish caught by the angler put the angler into the winner's circle. There is a new division, The Species Challenge. Win money for catching the largest fish of the 10 species in the contest. The registration has been reduced to $10 for adults. The contest is still free to youth 15 years old and younger. Pick up info packets at area bait shops.
