County Board meets When the Wayne County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday, legislators: Were supplied with lists of letters received from citizens for and against proposed smoking legislation. In January, three local restaurant owners provided a box full of about 1,000 customer signatures against the law. Tuesday, a list of names supporting legislation was over 600 strong. Also on hand, were five Lyons sixth-grade students who discussed the matter with supervisors during a break in the agenda. The students had organized themselves as C.L.A.S.P. - Children of Lyons Advocating for Smoke-free Places. Part of the letter they presented read: "We are fighting for our well-being. The children of Wayne County are endangered every time they enter restaurants..." The five students were: Jackie Young, Jennifer Cheney, Melody Gifford, Robert Sampson and Alex Austin. Heard a presentation from Rob Williams of Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation about new EPA regulations that will impact local municipalities. He suggested that each town adopt new zoning ordinances and gave samples for them to consider. The new ordinances would help towns comply with regs that will protect water quality whenever more than one acre of land is disturbed/developed. With colored slides, Paula Smith of Monroe County Soil & Water, explained how her county has been effected by paved areas, fewer wetlands, and fewer greenspaces. Williams said that the new regs will be phased in by 2001. Purchase authorizations included: - handicapped door openers for the County Health Facility on Nye Rd. ($4,400); - three bronze plaques for the courthouse ($5,235); - a pick-up truck for the Highway Superintendent ($20,000); - baby bibs printed with reminders to have children tested for lead poisoning ($1,410); - furnishings for three new office spaces at the Health Facility ($3,710) Copyright © 1999 |
