Theatre troupe tours schools Ithaca's Hangar Theatre performers gave a presentaton to Newark fifth graders at Kelley School on Monday.
Escape to the North, an original production about the Underground Railroad, follows the journey of a Virginia slave girl named Sookie, who flees from slavery in the south in search of freedom in Central New York. Along the way, Sookie and her companion Cato receive help from Harriet Tubman and John
Jones, leaders of the Underground Railroad. The play flashes from 1924 to 1854 as Sookie,
now an old woman, tells the story to her great-granddaughter. For the first time, the
elder woman realizes that, even at her age, The Hangar Theatre has been touring for five weeks, during Black History and Women's History Months. The company of six actors visited 50-plus elementary and middle schools. Copyright © 1999 |
