Colavito enters Hall of Fame
The induction will take place during dinner on April 1 at the Thruway Marriott Hotel in Henrietta. Colavito said, "It's a big honor especially being selected by your peers. It proves that longevity is special." A varsity coach at Newark for 22 years and nine at Canajoharie, Colavito won 156 career games. That winning record is fifth overall in Section 5 and 41st in the State. Colavito guided the Reds to four Sectional berths and the crown in 1990. "When Len came to Newark, I was only coaching a couple of years and we coached together for 22 years," said former assistant Jack Fisher. "We have some great memories, especially our sectional championship team of 1990 when both of us had sons starting both ways." Colavito gave praise to those who contributed to his success. "I share this award with my family, players, all of my former assistant coaches and the community of Newark," added Colavito. Fisher said, "Our families grew up together and we all want to congratulate Len on the recognition he is receiving for the many successful years he has produced." "I respect him as a coach and, more important, as a friend. He trusted me to run the defense and have input in many aspects of coaching." One of Rocky's highlights is the 1986 season when his team finished with a perfect 8-0 won lost mark. Also to be inducted is Tony Collins of the Penn Yan Mustangs (he graduated in '77), East Carolina and the NFL's New England Patriots. Collins played in Super bowl XX. Other former players making up the inaugural class are Bob Briggs of Brighton, Marcus Wilson of Greece Olympia, Jeff Weston of Cardinal Mooney, and Don Bossler of Batavia. Other coaches to be inducted include Don Santini of Fairport, Don Hagree of Greece Athena and Danny VenDetta of Batavia. Officials going into the Hall of Fame are Roy Miller and Dick Portlan. Channel 10 Sportscaster Rich Funke will be inducted as an At-large selection. Copyright © 1999 |
