Fairville residents speak out on zoning
By John Zornow

The Town of Arcadia Zoning Board met last night. The board rejected a proposal by Bernard Kneut of Route 88 South to operate a commercial auto repair business in a residential area.

John Greene, Zoning Board Chairman, read a synopsis of a previous Arcadia Planning Board meeting that rejected Kneut's variance application. The Zoning Board then voted 4-0 to deny the use variance based among other things that the project was an introduction of a commercial use into a residential area, and no evidence of financial hardship was proven in that the hardship was self-created. Board member Richard Cirulli abstained from voting.

Travis Pentycofe of Ryder Road was given an area variance to construct an addition to his residence with a 20 ft. setback instead of the required 25 ft.

Karen Christopherson appeared before the board to request a use variance to operate a commercial business at the corner of Rt. 88 and Fairville Station Rd. She intends to operate a farm shop and produce store at that location. Several residents at the meeting pleaded their case against the proposal. They claim that Christopherson's other properties on Chapel Street in Fairville and Garnsey Rd. in Palmyra are eyesores and already in violation of codes. Ed DeWolf of Rt. 88 spoke on behalf of the Fairville Fire Department, asking questions about fuel storage, hazardous waste, and parking. DeWolf's questions were answered by the applicant. DeWolf personally described Christopherson's properties as "disaster areas" in appearance. Jane Porter Smith representing the Porter family is concerned about what a junkyard would do to Fairville. She mentioned the fact that Fairville is finally going to get a water line, and she is concerned about property values.

Greene read the minutes of the Planning Board decision on the matter. The Planning Board has approved the concept with stipulations regarding hours of operation, number of vehicles, no cars for sale.

The Zoning Board then voted to reserve decision on the matter until the next meeting, to be held on Wednesday, June 2.

This is the third time in a year that the Town Zoning Board has reserved decision on variance requests.
