ELENBE
award winners

The third annual Wayne County Performing Arts Awards were distributed May 13, at the Newark High School auditorium. The ELENBEs are a homegrown award honoring the best in high school stage productions.

Best Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Production in both drama and musical categories, as well as runners-up in all categories, were honored with engraved awards provided by Gilbert's Jewelrey in Newark. Lyons National Bank sponsors the event.

In addition to sponsoring the awards ceremony and preceding dinner, the bank is donating a $250 scholarship to both of the winning schools.

WOKR-TV news anchor Don Alhart served as master of ceremonies.

- Best Musical: Hello Dolly, by Marion Central Schools, directed by Shelly Thompson; Runner-up: Bye Bye Birdie, Sodus High School, directed by Lisa Torres

- Best Drama: Up the Down Staircase, Red Creek High School, directed by David Hinkhouse; Runner-up: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Clyde-Savannah High School, directed by Jackie Tweedie

- Best Actor in a Musical: Eric Rittinger, Bye Bye Birdie, Sodus High School; Runner-up: Charlie Everson, Brigadoon, Williamson High School

- Best Actor in a Drama: Nathan Drahms, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Clyde-Savannah High School

- Best Actress in a Musical: Emily Howard, Guys and Dolls, Newark High School; Runner-up: Erica Gansz. Anything Goes, Lyons High School

- Best Actress in a Drama: Stephanie Musical, Up the Down Staircase, Red Creek High School; Runner-up: Johanna Henderberg, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Clyde-Savannah High School

- Best Supporting Actor in a Musical: Andy Slone, Guys and Dolls, Newark High School; Runner-up: Chris Hermann, Anything Goes, Lyons High School

- Best Supporting Actor in a Drama: Mike Caywood, Up the Down Staircase, Red Creek; Runner-up: Jerome Oertiling, Up the Down Staircase, Red Creek

- Best Supporting Actress in a Musical: Therese McKinny, Bye Bye Birdie, Sodus High School; Runner-up, Alicia Weeks, Hello Dolly, Marion Central

- Best Suporting Actress in a Drama: Andrea Bugos, Up the Down Staircase, Red Creek; Runner-up: Laura Rowe, Up the Down Staircase, Red Creek

Judges and results tabulation were provided by Wayne County Council for the Arts. This year's judges included Sue Bacon, Tracy Cretelle, Amber Horner, Ron Patrick, Mike Savage, Kevin Schoonover, and Penny Tweedie.

The ELENBE program was orignially conceived by, and is run by Bob Christmann and Newark Central Schools.
