Political protest in Lyons On November 6, at 10 a.m. in front of the courthouse in Lyons...in the tradition of Guy Fawkes Day political protest, Lakeshore Environmental Action will hang in effigy the Corporate Giant who increasingly rules our lives. Several people have asked why is LEA upset over Big Caps and globalization? Free trade is good, is it not? Yes, free trade is good, both for people seeking cheap merchandise at Wal-Mart and for farmers and business people exporting outside the country. (And there are plenty of small local businesses and family farms that DO sell products abroad). But LEA sees an alarming shift of power from elected government and the marketplace to the corporate board room. The consumer is supposed to be king in capitalist America. But he isn't if he has two sources for his news. He isn't if he can't buy hormone- and chemical-free food. He isn't if he has to take the health care corporate America says we can have. And he isn't if, under deregulation, a handful of companies control 3/4 of the world's electricity production. The Corporate Giant is shaping the future of our nation and our world. It works, often in collaboration with agencies such as the World Bank, World Trade Organization, and the IMF, behind closed doors to plot future social and economic policy. Remember the old Trilateral Commission Conspiracy brouhaha? Those people were upset over unaccountable power. And so are we. We don't want Lake Ontario's Nine Mile Point to be site of a regional high level rad waste dump and fuel rod processor for Russian waste. We don't want short-term next quarter profits at the expense of sound environmental policies towards water and soil. We are losing top soil at an appalling rate. We blacktop America to create habitat only for humans. Is every living thing a commodity to be priced by the market place? LEA believes not. If you share the anguish over the course we have embarked upon, call, write, join. There is little time to lose.
