Thanksgiving service for Newark friends

The ecumenical Thanksgiving Service will be on Wednesday, November 24 at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Elton O. Smith, Jr., and the Newark First United Methodist Church hosting the event.

Participants include Fred J. Pirelli, Mayor of Newark, who will bring the Thanksgiving Proclamation.

Meditations will be delivered by Rev. Timothy Johnson, Park Presbyterian; Pastor Bruce Hansen, Christian and Missionary Alliance; Rev. Gerald Harris, interim pastor, Arcadia Reformed. Assisting will be Rev. Barbara Kauber, St. Mark's Episcopal; Rev. John Watkins, Chaplain of ViaHealth; Rev. Carlos Smith, Emmanuel United Methodist; Rev. Dan Mallaber, Cornerstone Fellowship; Rev. Daniel Benedict, Sr., First Baptist; Rev. Stuart Buisch, Park Presbyterian, and Deborah Housel, pastoral associate, St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, in addition to Rev. Elton O. Smith, Jr., host pastor.

The Newark Community Choir under the direction of Peter Derse will present two anthems, "We're A Family," by Joseph Martin and "Simple Gifts," arranged by John Coates, Jr.

"Thanksgiving Bells," by Barbara Kinyon, will be performed by the Les Belles Tones of the host church and conducted by Kathy Cornwell. Gary L. Verdine will be organist.

An offering will be taken to support the outreach ministries of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and the local food closet.
