Happenings

By Carolyn Adriaansen (926-4436)

The early Dutch immigrants coming to Wayne County, beginning around 1840 as a part of the second Emigration from Holland, crossed the Atlantic Ocean in sailing vessels. The entire voyage could last from two to three weeks to one or two months. Most left Holland from Rotterdam, but the port at Antwerp, somewhat closer, was also used. In 1873 the Dutch formed the Holland-American Steamship Line and began running steamers to aid from Rotterdam and New York City. The time of the voyage was reduced to about nine days and the cost for third class or steerage from $20 to $12.

Although turkeys were plentiful, there is no record that they were eaten on this first Thanksgiving holiday. The turkey, according to one doubtful source, is said to have gotten its name from the doctor on Columbus's first voyage, Luis de Torres, who exclaimed 'Tukki' on seeing the unusual fowl for the first time. This is Hebrew for 'big bird.' The word 'turkey' was familiar to the Pilgrims from their days in England where it meant a guinea fowl. This bird was imported into England by way of Turkey and acquired the name of the country. The resemblance between the guinea fowl and our native bird caused the latter to be called, 'turkey.'
