Jim Healy of Newark, Fredonia class of 1988, was one of six inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at SUNY Fredonia at a ceremony held recently at the college. The inductees were from the classes of '82, '83, '88, '92 and '95. Dr. Dennis Hefner, President of the college, welcomed the inductees and guests and Dr. Patrick Damore, Professor Emeritus Fredonia, acted as Master of Ceremonies. Healy, a Social Studies teacher at Simon Sanchez High School, Yigo, Guam was honored based on the following accomplishments while at Fredonia: "A four-year member of the Fredonia State swimming and diving team, Healy was considered the energy source of the team by Head Coach John Crawford. A captain his junior and senior seasons, he was voted Most Valuable Swimmer his senior year. Undefeated against SUNYAC opponents in dual meet competition during Healy's participation, the Blue Devils were conference champions his senior year and placed second his junior and sophomore years. Over the course of his career, Healy captured ten individual SUNYAC championship titles and set freestyle records in every conceivable category - six conference, seven SUNYAC meet, seven school and two pool records." "He earned an All-American title in the 1650 yard freestyle three times - in '85, '86, and in '87. In '88 he received the James Fulton Award as the most outstanding swimmer in the SUNY Athletic Conference. Equally accomplished in the classroom, in '88 he received the Joseph Keyser Award as the most outstanding male Scholar/Athlete at Fredonia State. He was also a three-year recipient of Dean's List honors. A charismatic individual with exceptional concern and compassion for his fellow classmates, Healy was a member of the Residence Life staff and sat on the Fredonia Athletic Council for two years." A plaque inscribed with Healy's awards and picture has been hung in the School's Hall of Fame. A duplicate plaque was presented to Healy. Currently, Healy is training one of Guam's Olympic hopefuls - Dan O'Keefe, former UCLA standout from 1990-'94. He will travel to the December 1-3 US Open in San Antonio, TX to qualify in the 100 meter butterfly. If he makes it, Healy will accompany him to Sydney for the September games.
