For millions of dogs in over 6000 shelters across the county, being homeless and alone is an everyday reality. The Humane Society of Wayne County is celebrating national Adopt A Shelter Dog Month during October, a campaign sponsored by The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, (ASPCA), to raise public awareness about these animals and the benefits of adopting a dog from a local shelter.

harry.jpg (11043 bytes)The Humane Society of Wayne County advises that while shelters offer many suitable dogs, everyone in the household, including parents, should be in favor of the adoption. Choosing the right family pet is important, since not all pets are appropriate for every household.

Choosing a dog that matches a family's life style and expectations is a win-win situation that will ensure happiness of both the new pet and everyone in the household. Remember to consider other pet care responsibilities as well, such as financial costs, commitment to the animal's welfare and daily care, moving apartment building restrictions, and willingness to behavior train the dog. Thinking before adopting will save the animal from being returned to the shelter and will offer the pet and family a long and satisfying life together.
