The Newark Reds Varsity girls volleyball team capture the Finger Lakes East Championship with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Canandaigua Braves on Tuesday at home.

Newark is undefeated with a 20-0 record. The Lady Reds found themselves down most of the night. In the first set, Newark was down 12-3 before rallying to win the set 15-12. The Braves evened the match at one all with a 15-3 win.

Newark led early in the third set 12-6 before the Braves rallied to win the set at 15-13 and take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth set, Newark trailed early but bounced back to tie 10 all. Newark regained the lead thanks to serves by Jennifer Perricone. Two straight spikes by Kim Golding and Ashley Scutella gave the Reds the final lead and a 15-11 win.

In the final set, Newark trailed early at 7-1. They rallied for four straight points to make it close, finally winning the deciding fifth set, 16-14.

Kadi Burgess had 25 kills and four aces to lead the winners. Sarah Coolidge had three aces and eight kills. Staci Dulmage had four aces. Crystal McIlwain was brilliant with 37 assists and nine digs. Kim Golding had 14 kills.
