Halloween
Stories
by Melissa White
Halloween is a fun part of fall for kids young and old to enjoy. It's fun to go trick or
treating and it's almost as much fun handing out candy to the little ghouls that come to
the door. Some trick or treaters are so young, they aren't sure what they're supposed to
say or do. (But they do catch on fast, don't they?)
Some cute Halloween books to watch for are:
A Very Scary Ghost Story by Joanne Barkan. This one I found in the kids' books from the Scholastic sheets that are sent home during the school year. It's cute and it glows in the dark. The story is about two ghosts that go out for Halloween but aren't really sure what to do.
Other glow in the dark books from Scholastic include:
A Very Scary Ghost Story
A Very Scary Haunted House
A Very Scary Jack O Lantern, and
A Very Scary Witch Story.
( I haven't read any of the others but they'd be fun to check into.
Clifford's First Autumn by Norman Bridwell, and Cliffords First Halloween are two fun books about the big red dog as a puppy, having his first experiences with leaves, candied apples and Jack-O-Lanterns.
Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman. A hauntingly fun book about a witch who has found a big pumpkin in her garden but she can't get it to budge. She gets help from a ghost, a vampire and a ghoul.
Winnie the Pooh's Halloween by Bruce Talkington. We love Winnie the Pooh books, but sometimes the text is a little lengthy. I tend to skim the page picking out the really important parts. Of course, this worked better when my kids could not read...now they know what I'm doing. This book is funny - the friends of the Hundred Acre Wood are trying to figure out what Halloween is all about. Christopher Robin tries to explain. This one is really funny and enjoyable.
It's fun to read holiday stories before the holiday - it seems to get you more in the mood (like hanging up decorations and planning your costume). Have fun reading and have a safe and Happy Halloween.
