By John Zornow

Newark's oldest business, the Newark Granite Works, located on North Main St., has new owners.

The business was started in 1850 as the George B. Gaslin Monument Works.

Pictured are brothers David, Bill and John Murphy, who purchased the business on August 25 from Sue Russell, who had owned it for several years. David is associated with his father Paul Murphy, in operating the Parker Rayfield & Murphy Funeral Home.

M. J. Flynn learned the stonecutting trade from George Gaslin and purchased and operated the monument works on Palmyra Street (West Union Street, location of Pontillo's Pizza) from 1912 until his death in 1935. M. J. Flynn was Newark's Fire Chief for 21 years.
