Newarks of the World unite in Texas The following is reprinted from the Newark Advertiser in Newark, England: Sizzling reception in USA A sizzling reception greeted a group from Newark, England, at the Newarks of the World reunion, as Texan temperatures hit 100 degrees F. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Todd of Lamb Close, Newark, (England) were in a party of five that made the trip from Nottinghamshire to the seventh reunion in Newark, Texas, 15 miles from Fort Worth. Representatives from 13 Newarks attended the four-day event, which began on Thursday last week. Mr. Todd said: 'The first thing that struck us was the heat - it remained at 100 degrees F during the reunion and on a visit to a ranch touched 108. The second thing that struck us was the friendliness of everybody; residents, hotel staff and other delegates.' Mr. Todd told the Mayor of Newark, Texas, Mr. Bill Malone, that although their party included no one in an official capacity, they had come to see friends and had found them. Newark, Texas, has a population of less than 1,000 and is in Wise County on the northern shore of Eagle Mountain Lake. Mr. Todd said: "It turned out to have a full range of commercial facilities, shops, garage, boutique and catering outlets which belied the size of the town. It is also home to three superb new schools which serve a large part of the Wise County area." Mr. Todd said the parade on Saturday saw the population of the town swell to some 3,000 as everyone who had any relatives there, or any other connection, came from neighbouring counties. He said the atmosphere was tremendous and just reward for the committee that had put it all together. The event finale was a visit to Fort Worth for a dinner and rodeo show. The reunion is held every two years and in 2001 will return to Newark, California, which hosted the first event in 1987. The event will move back to Newark, Ohio in 2003 to help tie-in with its bicentennial celebrations. Thirty miles east of Columbus, Newark, Ohio has a 44,500 population and hosted the 1993 reunion.
