Walkers raise money for March of Dimes Businesses and organizations were honored for their participation in WalkAmerica at an awards ceremony held by the March of Dimes at the Quality Inn last Monday. WalkAmerica, the March of Dimes major fundraiser nationwide, was held for the first tirne in Newark on April 24. More than 70 walkers raised over $6000. Local volunteer organizers were Dave Wind, from Wind and Associates, and Mark Santelli, from Equitable. Businesses and organizations that were honored: Equitable: Top Fund-raising Team Appreciation Plaque for raising over $500 Breen's IGA: Williamson; Highest Per Capita Team Wayne County Public Health: Bank Day Award Appreciation Plaque for raising over $500 Linda Walker: Top Walker Award IEC: Appreciation Plaque for raising over $500 Wayne Medical Group: Appreciation Plaque for raising over $500 Club Flexer: Appreciation Plaque for raising over $500 Every day in Upstate New York, eight babies die before reaching their first birthday. WalkAmerica supports March of Dimes programs of research, cornmunity services, education and advocacy to save babies from these needless deaths. In the Finger Lakes region, the March of Dimes funds 11 community grants, including the Wayne County Public Health Service's Healthy Babies, Healthy Familics II, a community-based program for teens and other high-risk expectant parents. In 1998, the March of Dimes also investcd two million dollars in research in New York. Two research grants totaling $100,00 were given to researchers at the University of Rochester School of Mcdicinc.
