Home compost training offered The Western Finger Lakes Authority is offering a course titled 'As the Worm Turns' for people interested in composting kitchen scraps and yard debris in their own backyards.
For people unable to make the Thursday meetings, Haizlip will also conduct the training on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meetings will be at the Park Presbyterian Church on Maple Court, near the Newark Post Office. Each participant will receive a copy of the training manual, the Cornell Waste Management Institute publication 'Master Composter Resource Manual.' Topics include the science of composting, building compost containers, solving composting problems, and developing training materials. The Authority is building a compost demonstration site and students will help design and develop that location to train others in composting. The training materials will be used for doing group presentations for any age group. Composting is a natural process that occurs over time wherever organic material lies exposed to weather. Gardeners love compost because the finished product provides valuable, but free, soil amendment. By composting leaves, grass clippings and kitchen scraps, gardeners remove materials from their trash and produce a free, product that makes their plants healthier, more productive, and more beautiful.
