From the Marion Supervisor

Census employees are canvassing homes to obtain census information. All employees are required to display an ID badge, and will also be identified by a government 'Official Business' sign in their vehicle. The operation will run seven days per week. Please cooperate with the workers and respond to their questions to the best of your ability. The information received is crucial to the Town, County, and State governments because our financial aid/grant eligibility is determined by the census figures. Most assistance programs are based not only on the population of the area, but on the median income of the locality and region.

There have been some changes in the Motor Vehicle Office. NYS driver license renewals will be valid for eight years, and all renewals must have a vision test, either at the DMV or by providing a report from a vision care professional within six months before your license is renewed. If you are receiving a license for the first time, it will be valid for five years. For vehicle registrations, the renewals from November 1 will be issued new license plates (replacing the Statue of Liberty plates). A plate fee of $5.50 will be added to the renewal fee. If you have a standard issue plate, you may opt to keep it for a one-time fee of $20. Finally, if you drive a light-duty pickup truck, you may have the option to receive passenger plates instead of the commercial plates. Bring or mail your renewals to the County office at 9 Pearl St., Lyons (14489), not only for quicker service but in order to keep a portion of the money in Wayne County.

We are still accepting applications for counselors for the Summer Rec program at the Park. We have increased the hourly rate this year, and offer a graduated rate for those who are returning for the second or third time. You must be 16 or older to apply.

Downtown merchants organized the fund-raising program in order to purchase 'Welcome to Marion' signs to be placed at the entrances to the hamlet. Thank you to all of you who worked so hard on this project. There is now only one downtown storefront which is not renovated...that's quite an accomplishment for our Main Street merchants.

With sadness I report that the Winross property on Route 21 (across from the Park) now has a 'For Sale' sign on it. We are working actively with the Wayne County Economic Development Corporation to find an investor who would be interested in purchasing 65 acres of industrial land to develop. Please call my office (926.4145) if you have any leads.
