Roses for sale for Mother's day

The 5th Annual Mother's Day Rose and Flower Sale is on now through Friday, May 5.

Students from the Newark Central School District and St. Michael School are going door to door taking orders for this year's selection of live, potted rose plants, geraniums and New Guinea impatiens. Newark's Rose Committee will be helping to organize the event.

Free tickets for a home game double-header to see the Newark Raptors Baseball Team will also be given out with every order, while supplies last.

Funds raised by the students support the annual Rose Court Essay contest, where over $1500 in gifts and scholarships are awarded each year.

Funds will also be used to create a brick assembly area in front of St. Michael School around their flagpole. Other funds have been pledged by the Rose Committee to help pay for some of the costs of moving trees to the Newark High School's Columbine Garden.

A new community park for Newark in front of the entrance to Showplace 5 Theater is being funded by some of the proceeds for the sale. The Rose Committee is sponsoring this new park. Henry Dittmar of Dittmar's Nursery has been instrumental with the planning, design and installation of the park. This project was started last fall and the plantings will continue to evolve over the course of this year. When fully planted, the garden will have flowers in bloom from early spring until snow fall.

Next time you're downtown to shop or headed for a movie at Showplace 5 Theater, leave yourself a few extra minutes to stroll through this new park. A gift for everyone to enjoy given by Newark's school children and the Rose Committee.

If a student doesn't make it to your door during the Mother's Day Rose Sale, orders are being taken by phone. You may call the order line at 331.7230 and someone will call you back to help you with your order. The price remains the same at $5 per rose, and $5 a pair, for either geraniums or impatiens. All are in four-inch pots and may be picked up at the Arcadia Reformed Church on Friday, May 12 from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. (These times and pick-up location are for telephone orders and Newark public school orders only. Orders placed with St. Michael students should be picked up at St. Michael School on Friday, May 12 at the end of the school day.)
