Volunteers needed for youth emergencies

The Emergency Youth Housing Program needs individuals and families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to troubled youth that are in crisis. The program serves youth ages 12 to 18 who are unable to remain in their current circumstances due to some crisis in their home - youth at risk of running away or have already done so.

Volunteer Interim Families provide temporary emergency shelter to a youth - from one to 30 nights depending on the circumstances. During this time, the staff of the program have daily contact with the youth and the volunteer home. The program staff provides case management with the youth, which may or may not include shelter, mediation with the family, transportation to doctor or other appointments or other needs the youth may have.

To qualify as a Volunteer Interim Family Home, one must be over 21, have adequate resources to provide at least three meals per day and a bed for the youth to sleep in. Potential VIF homes are certified through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. The criteria for certification are discussed at the initial meeting. Staff and other community resources provide free training. The Emergency Youth Housing staff screens all youth prior to entrance in the program.

For more information, or to inquire about becoming a VIF home, contact the program's office at 165 East Union St. in Newark, by calling 331.8434.

The Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth, the Wayne County Board, of Supervisors and Family Counseling Service of the Finger Lakes fund this program.
