Missing Sodus

The weather was a medley this week, with thunderstorms, muggy weather and a few nice cool days. The kids don't mind, though... as long as they don't have to go to school. That's all that matters. (Have you noticed they don't want to talk about school supplies or backpacks? They want no reminders of what's to come.)
We did go to Syracuse and saw many of the Vintage Cars. My husband worked at the Car Show, and, as promised, here are some pictures of cars.
The Reading Program at the Sodus Library is almost over, but there are still many things to do right up until the end. On August 11, from l to 2:30 p.m., there will be crafts with Sandy from the Kraft Shack. On Monday, Aug. 14, there will be a storytime from l0:30-ll:30 a.m. On Tuesday the l5th, the Cyborg Reading Club meets from l to 2. Thursday the l7th, from l to 2, Reading Discoveries. Friday the l8th, from l to 2:30, it's Discover Crafts with Sandy. Saturday the l9th at noon, there will be a picnic and at 1 p.m., Fred Gee will entertain and end the program on a fun note. Saturday the 26th will be the last day to pick up your prizes. I'll check in with Carol and find out who received prizes and hopefully add them to the column in weeks to come.
Don't forget the Summer Concert at Sodus Point on Sunday. Singing for your pleasure will be the Chorus of the Genesee. Barbershop on the Beach. I will admit I haven't heard the chorus, but living next door to Al Dobbin for so many years, I had the opportunity to hear a few of the melodious tones. Seems to me he was always traveling from place to place with them. Pack up your lawn chairs and ice tea. I'm sure you won't regret it.

They have loads of ideas for summer crafts, as well as holidays and seasons.
You know the dill dip everyone craves during the football season? Usually that time of year (especially Super Bowl time), Wegmans has the dip already made up. We were at a party the other day and one of the guests was kind enough to pass a similar recipe to me. Next week, I'll share it with you so have your recipe cards ready.
Today, the Williamson Library celebrates the closing, or should I say the landing of, their Summer Reading Program with a visit from the Bubble Man, Doug Rougeux and his Bubble mania show at 1 p.m. All guests are invited to stay after the show for refreshments and special treats.
If you're not too busy tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 12), and you'll be in Sodus Point, stop in and watch the Dog Obedience Show. It is the 4th Annual Agility and Obedience Show. The fun begins early, 8:l5 a.m. For more information, call 483.8567. We have attended in the past and it was a lot of fun. Brush up on your dog breeds and surprise the kids with what you know.
The Youth Center will be having a Community Sale on Saturday, August 26 from 7:30 until ? There will be crafts, food and garage sale items. If you are interested and would like to have a spot in a covered building, the cost will be $l0 and $5 for an outside area. Tables are supplied, and there will be people to assist in setting up. If you'd like to donate items, call the Center from 2-4 p.m. All donations are accepted and the Center can arrange for the pick up of items if they have 24 hour notice. Call 483.8560 or the Youth Center at 483.0495. (Thanks, Alice.)
Planning on taking the kids to the Sodus Point beach to cool off in the water? Lifeguards are on duty every day during the month of August. The beach also offers restrooms, a bath house, and a snack bar. And, of course, the playground. We always found the best times for us to go to the beach were first thing in the morning before it got too hot, or just as the sun was setting. Watching the sun setting over the water and feeding the ducks is a relaxing experience. Talking about going to the beach really makes has me Missing Sodus.
Don't forget, if you have something you'd like to see in the column, please send it along to me at
