Newark Rotary gears up for new year
By John Zornow

In July, outgoing Newark Rotary President Gary Reilly highlighted his recent year. Currently with 100 members, the Newark club contributed over $5900 to the Foundation and to Polio Plus in 1999-2000. Among the bright spots of the year were: the visits of Gudeta Roba, our exchange student from Africa; and Tom Morrision's 50 years of membership and perfect attendance in Rotary. The World Community Service Project in the Philippines saw President Reilly and wife, Norma, proudly involved.

Blessed with a 'few extra dollars' at the end the fiscal year, the following well deserving organizations are on the receiving end.

* Newark Library: Rotary Book Memorial in memory of Chuck Bird, Dave Scott, Ray Hannan, T. Spencer Knight, C. W. Stuart, and Kendrick J. Smith.

* Foster GrandParents Program

* Newark Food Closet

* Wayne County Humane Society

* Wayne County Boy Scouts

* American Red Cross

* Camp Onseyawa

A blood drive at St. Michael's Church on July 22 resulted in the participation of 130 people with 123 pints of blood being collected. Tom Morrision filled in for Bob Goodman is this effort in which Newark Rotary always cooperates.

Newark Rotary Cooks at Hill Cumorah. The Newark club participated in serving up the refreshments at the annual Hill Cumorah Pageant. The joint effort by area clubs is a major fund and friend raiser. It is gratifying to all who work as they meet people from all over the country and world and receive good comments and thanks.

Coming events of interest to Newark Rotarians: The Amazing Maize: Newark has been invited to participate with proceeds going to Camp Onseyawa. Rotary Grand Prix Rally: October 28 at Waterloo High School. First Annual Flannel Open: Saturday, September 30 at Seneca Lake Country Club.

Visit from District Governor, Jack Best: The governor praised Newark Rotary for being a leader in getting women involved, but stressed that district-wide membership and involvement needs to be addressed by Creating Awareness and Taking Action.

1,475 area Rotarians and their guests and family members recently attended Rotary night at Frontier Field. The clubs participated in pre-game events including a parade of 300 Rotarians carrying club banners, with a club member singing the national anthem and Governor Jack Best throwing out the first pitch. In addition, the Newark Club sponsored approximately 50 children to attend the Rotary night game in conjunction with the Alex Eligh Community Center and the Newark Housing Authority.
