Balloon festival this weekend

The Friends of Sampson State Park are hosting a hot air balloon festival this weekend, Aug. 26-27, to benefit Mercy Flight. Sampson State Park is on Route 96A, Romulus.

About a dozen hot air balloons are expected to lift off from Sampson between 6-7 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. To book a balloon ride, call Mercy Flight Central at 716.396.0584.

Bring a tent and spend the weekend. For reservations, call 1.800.456.CAMP or on the Internet at www.reserveamerica.com

Admission is $6 per car for the day. Tethered balloon rides and helicopter rides will be available at special rates, providing fun in the air all during the day.

Marcus Johnson will have paddleboats, kayaks and canoes to rent for a ride on Seneca Lake. The celebration of the earth will include demonstrations by state park experts, guided nature walks, exhibits on tree and wildlife identification, a presentation on the white deer preservation project at the former Seneca Army Depot, search and rescue dog demonstrations, archery demonstrations, and more.

The Military Museum that honors Navy and Air Force World War II vets will be open for tours throughout the day.
