Fire ravages Finewood's in Newark

A wind-whipped fire destroyed the buildings housing Finewood's Furniture and Appliances at 6892 Route 31 East, between Newark and Lyons yesterday afternoon.
The initial reports indicate that a wood stove is the source of the fire. Losing their apartments in the blaze were Rod Finewood, owner of the complex, and a family of four, including two children. Finewood was awakened by a phone call at 1:15 p.m., and at that moment realized there was smoke in the house.

Firefighters at the scene were from Marbletown, Newark, Fairville, Phelps, Lyons, Wayne Co. Emergency Response Unit. Port Gibson and Fairville sent units to stand by in the Newark Fire Hall, Shortsville was at Port Gibson, and another Port Gibson Unit stood by in Marbletown's hall.
Marbletown Chief Ken Boyd was in charge at the scene. NAVA was busy taking firefighters to and from the ER at Newark ViaHealth. Also helping with calls were Port Gibson and Fairville ambulance crews. About 3 p.m., a triage center was set up in Wal-Mart's restaurant, with Port Gibson ambulance crew coordinating the effort.
Five firefighters were treated either at the scene or hospital, with ankle and rib injuries, eye injuries and a high blood pressure incident.
The call came in to 911 at 1:15 p.m. and firemen finished cleaning up at the scene at 7:30 p.m. There are trucks at the scene this morning to keep an eye on the smoldering ruins.
