Jamie Bialek, a junior at the Newark High School, is shown checking out the amateur radio equipment donated by Russ Harris. Bialek is a graduate of the Radio and Television Broadcasting class taught by Ed Doyle at the high school. He is also a licensed Amateur Radio operator (KG2JI). Doyle (KC2BEO) states that Bialek is an avid "ham radio operator" and has encouraged other students to get involved with amateur radio. The class has a Kenwood two-meter rig that all students can operate under the class call sign of (KC2COH). Doyle uses Amateur Radio to introduce students to the "radio" portion of the Radio and Television Broadcasting classes. Future plans for the class include setting up a packet station, where students can send messages using radios linked to computers. In the near future, it will be possible to talk to astronauts in space as they travel on shuttle missions. Some ham stations communicate from continent to continent through ham satellites or by bouncing signals off the moon. So if you hear the call sign - KC2COH - you'll know it's students in school, learning proper radio procedures. Copyright © 2000 |
