Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Along with Missing Sodus, I can honestly say, 'I miss Spring!' Can it get much colder!? (We try to be good and not complain, but getting to the car in the morning to go to work, getting groceries, and standing out with the kids waiting for the bus would be much more pleasant if we didn't have to freeze in the process. Well, just keep thinking warm thoughts.

Some warming news: my husband is in Palm Springs for business this week. (I'm trying really hard to be happy for him. It gives the term 'wish you were here' a whole new meaning.) Today, the weather there will be 76 and sunny. Another warm place is Maui, where one of our readers lives. I keep in touch with her a lot during these cold months. She's been shoveling, too ... sand. (Patty enjoys seeing the pictures of our snow. It's good someone enjoys it.) You two just keep enjoying the warm weather...ours is coming soon! (Did the Groundhog see his shadow? )

If you saw Al Dobbin on the first of this month, did you remember to wish him a happy birthday? Al is now 82 years old and has more energy then I ever had. He has been keeping busy snow-blowing the snowmanneighbors' driveways, and singing at the Nursing Homes. He is looking for the words to Nat King Cole's Rambling Rose. If you have the words, please send them along so Al knows what he's singing.

Al and Mr. Stirling have been helping Lill Burkholder who has not been feeling well. (It's nice to know you have people to watch out for you. Feel better, Lill!) Al's daughter, Sue, has informed me that there are 52 more days before Spring. (Let's hope they go as fast as the 52 shopping days before Christmas!)

Speaking of Birthdays: Emily Clark has one on February 8; and Lorrie Zone has one on February 10.

Everyone enjoys a good mystery, and there'll be one at Cinelli's Country House Restaurant on Saturday, February 12. The Mystery Company of the Finger Lakes will be presenting: MURDER MYSTERY DINNER THEATRE at the Sodus restaurant. There will be a wine and cheese reception at 6:30 p.m.; dinner at 7:30 p.m. (It's no mystery that the food is great at Cinellis.) Prime Rib, Chicken Cordon Blue, or Stuffed Sole will be served. Dessert is included with a cash bar. After you've been at the Dinner Theater, you can enjoy the evening and stay at the Historic Maxwell Creek Bed and Breakfast. SarahDinner tickets can be purchased with or without accommodations. Dinner and Theatre is $l00 per couple; with a room, it's$l85. For more information, or to make reservations, call: 3l5.483.9154

The Williamson Library has been busy. They are completely automated and excited about it. They are asking all patrons who do not yet have a bar-coded card to please stop by the charge desk and get one. While there, everyone is welcome to make a Valentine for a Veteran. The library will be mailing this special gift of love to the local VA Hospital. And kids may enter to win a sweet treat in the Children's area by filling out a form telling about their favorite book. All who enter receive a kiss bookmark.

The Lap Sit Storytime and the Pre-school Storytime has already begun, but it's not too late to register. Classes are not full yet. Lapsit Storytimes will be Mondays: February 14, 28, March 6 and 20 Beginning at l0:30 (save those dates). Pre-School Storytime will be on Wednesdays: February 2 through the 23rd. They begin at l0:30.

Carol Garland from the Sodus Library has informed me that the 2000 Newberry and Caldecott Awards were announced last week. The 2000 Newberry Award Winner for outstanding Children's Literature is Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis.

basketsI will let you know of the 2000 Caldecott Medal Award winners next week. Carol has told me that the Library has most of these award winning books already. If she's missing one, let her know. She'll be happy to help you.

Don't forget breakfast at the Wallington Fire Department on Sunday, February 13 from 8 'til noon. All-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfast $5 - a nice way to start your day. Wallington Fire Department is on Old Ridge Rd. in Sodus.

I had the opportunity to see the Fabric Crochet Baskets that are made by Diane Phillips. They are beautiful! Diane will be offering free classes at the Penfield Crossroads Antique and Craft Co-op. She also has classes at the L.W. Emporium in Ontario. There is a sign up sheet at the Emporium, which is open from l0 to 5, Tuesdays-Sundays. Diane also has classes (at your convenience) at her office on Canterbury Place on Monroe Avenue. You can call 716.747.4768. (Remember, Easter is coming.)

snowcovered treesThe Kraft Shack has a five-night Hole Chair Caning class taking place beginning, Wednesday, February 9 from 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. You will learn the old time craft of caning chairs. Your chair must be cleaned of old cane, refinished (if so desired) and ready to cane. (Your chair must have the holes around the seat to cane.) $38 includes all.

Gosh, everyone has been so busy. Thanks to everyone who has sent me information to share (and to those who will be sending things soon.) Write me at

mgoodcooke@aol.com

I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great week and think warm thoughts.
