Immigrants received encouragement to come to the United States from a variety of sources, not the least of which were letters from family and friends who had made the voyage. The earliest immigrants arrived on sailing ships that took from one to three months to cross the Atlantic. When steam-powered ships became common, the voyage lasted about 10 days. The shorter crossing time meant cheaper tickets, less chance of danger from bad weather, and a lower incidence of diseases caused by poor living conditions.
