News and Notes from Sodus Chamber

Sodus Chamber of Commerce met at Nick's Family Restaurant on Feb. 3

Members present were Jim Hopkins, Richard Ransley, Nancy Ransley, Kim Scribner, John Catlin, Mary Piekunka, Ernie Piekunka, Jim Colucci, Martin Seppeler, Ray Seppeler, Bill Stirling, Mary Cook, Carole Snyder, and Mary Jane Mumby.

Reports were given on the plans for Citizen of the Year banquet. This will be held at The Normandy Inn on Tuesday, April 11 with cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available advanced sale only.

Dinner selections will be Prime Rib, Chicken Parmesan or Stuffed Haddock and cost will include tax and tip. The speaker will be Marge Perez from the Wayne County Dept. of Publicity and Tourism and she will speak on 'Main Street USA.'

A motion was made and passed to hold a raffle at the banquet. Chamber members and area businesses will be solicited for donations to be raffled and money raised will be used for seed money for future fund raisers. John Catlin will be in charge of running the raffle. Ads have been placed seeking nominations, with a deadline of March 1.

Mary Piekunka reported that she has received a few calls from people asking questions about the area and nearby accommodations. No one could figure out where her phone number is appearing unless it's on the Web site from Wayne County Tourism. This raised the issue again of having a dedicated phone number and office space for the Chamber.

Jim Hopkins is in charge of getting a speaker for the March meeting to discuss setting up a Web page for Sodus.

The Wayne County Business Show is scheduled for May 3 in Newark. Mary Piekunka and Mary Jane Mumby volunteered to staff the booth that day.

Ray Seppeler talked about the condition of the sidewalks at the east end of Main Street and the urgent need for repair. He felt that the village was not following up on his concerns. He passed around a letter he had written. It was felt that the Chamber couldn't do much to help since few members were village residents but that we could lend our moral support to his effort. Mary Cook stated that she knew the village board had discussed this issue.

The possibility of not having the Christmas Train ride was brought up. Jim Hopkins will talk to Ontario Midland and find out what the problems or concerns are. Members felt that we could charge a small amount to help pay for the insurance the train must carry. The fall foliage rides will hopefully still start in Sodus. John Cook and Donna Chittenden are working with RG&E to clear the land by the Town barns so the boarding can be done there and parking can be at the town barns and Dynalec.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 2 at Nick's Family restaurant starting at 6 p.m.
