New birthing center in Newark

Last week, Newark's hospital opened a new birthing center. The Family Birthing Center is located on the fourth floor of ViaHealth of Wayne's Newark campus.

The new unit provides obstetrician/gynecologists, pediatricians and anesthesiologists on-call 24 hours a day. They work closely with certified nurse midwives and highly trained nurses to partner with an expectant mother during her labor and delivery. The birthing center offers 14 spacious, private, home-like suites for women with full private baths. It also has a whirlpool room for support during labor and a dedicated surgical suite on the unit.

The Family Birthing Center celebrated its grand opening on Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony, guided tours of the center and a special presentation by pediatrician Dr. Michael Jordan.

Staff emphasize a focus on the family through services that promote bonding such as rooming-in for baby and large rooms with plenty of space to accommodate visiting siblings and other family members. A lactation consultant is also available to assist new moms with breastfeeding.

The project began in July of last year, with a cost of $1.7 million. The Center has 14 beds.
