Catholic Schools Week observed

Meaghan Culver, Shannon Burgio & Angela ArchundeSt. Michael School in Newark is celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Money was collected and given to the seven missions who visited the school in January.

Tuesday, was a quiet Spiritual Day centering on Catholic Christian heritage and why Catholic schools are important. Anita Loson, a teacher at the school, coordinated events.

The Oratorical Contest for 7th and 8th graders was held yesterday. Winners are pictured: Meaghan Culver (first), Shannon Burgio (third) and Angela Archunde (second place).

The other contestants were Kate Mooney, Tom McCue, Katie Gorall, Thereze Seoud, Kristi St. Michael's kidsSargent, Joel Barry, Heidi Spiegel and Sarah Hamilton.

Yesterday was also the 100th day of school and was celebrated in the primary grades. In the afternoon, Charles Girard from Palmyra presented the story of 'Father Baker' to the grades 5-8 students.

Pictured are children in kindergarten to fourth grade, in the gym, doing classroom presentations using choral speaking, plays, songs or poetry.

An open house and ice cream social will be held tonight, and St. Michael's kidstomorrow, it will be the Student Council vs. Faculty volleyball game, an eighth grade vs. faculty basketball game, a spirit dress down day, Courtesy Captain sundaes with the principal, and an exotic animal presentation for grades K-3. A dance for grades 6-8 students closes the day.

St. Michael School is the only Catholic School in Wayne County.
