Newark teens chosen by The Young Americans

In giving their all - and then some - while performing during The Young Americans music outreach tour last fall, Trenton Barry and Travis Bean surprised themselves and others with their talent.

The NHS seniors also impressed The Young Americans' recruiters, so much so that they've been invited to perform with the highly-acclaimed show choir in California next year.

Barry and Bean & Jean BendixAfter three days of high-energy dancing, singing and improvisational comedy instruction with 247 other students from Newark and area schools and districts, Barry, 18, and Bean, 17, were among 16 area students who auditioned before the recruiters on October 23.

Because the two caught the eye of the recruiters, they have the distinction of being invited to be part of a select group of high school graduates, from all over the U.S., who are asked each year to go to California and work with the renowned show choir.

Students in California can audition after their 15th birthday, but out-of-state students must be high school graduates before they can become part of the group.

Barry and Bean (pictured here with NHS choir instructor Jean Bendix) have decided to take them up on their invitation and next fall, they will go to Cypress, California and work with The Young Americans, who have appeared in Super Bowl half-time shows; in Coca Cola commercials and David Letterman and Jay Leno shows, as well as in their celebrated music outreach tours both here and abroad.
