For the 2000 growing season, Ammie Chickering of Savannah, will be joining Elizabeth Henderson and Gregory Palmer as one of the farmers at Peacework Organic Farm.

For eight years, Ammie has been the Administrative Secretary of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA- NY). She brings a lifelong background of organic gardening, studies in soil science, and five years of experience as an inspector for NOFA-NY's Organic Certification Program to her new job.

Peacework Organic Farm has completed its first season of community supported agriculture on Welcher Road in the Town of Arcadia. During the 1999 season, twenty local families (along with 180 Rochester households) picked up their weekly shares of organic vegetables at the farm and participated in the harvesting. Besides the families, the 20 residents of Hannick Hall, a Newark program of Catholic Family Charities, shared in the food and farm work. Despite the worst drought in many years, the weekly packets were ample, with 7 to 11 different vegetables and herbs every week for 25 weeks. Each share feeds a family of two to four members, often with some food left over to freeze for the winter.

On fifteen acres rented from the Kraai family, Peacework grows enough produce to feed over 200 families for the six-month season. The farm produces 70 crops - generous servings of favorites like lettuce, peas, carrots, onions, tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, broccoli, and garlic, and small amounts of more unusual vegetables like bok choi and tat soi. Members enjoy the experience of eating garden fresh food without all the work of making a garden themselves. The farm would welcome a few more local families to join for 2000.
