Seeking people to raise ring-necked pheasants

pheasantAre you looking for opportunities to spend some time with your son or granddaughter or even the neighborhood children? Cornell Cooperative Extension along with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation offers you a chance to raise ring-necked pheasants.

On Monday, March 13 an informational meeting will be held at the Cooperative Extension Office in Newark at 7:30 p.m. You will review the program's requirements, discuss the rearing techniques and releasing procedures and any other project requirements. There will be time for a question and answer period.

All chicks need to be ordered by Wednesday, March 15.

The one-day-old chicks usually arrive at the Extension Office in the middle of May. All the state pheasants are now being hatched and delivered from the DEC Reynolds Game farm in Ithaca. So you have approximately two months to make the arrangements for the housing needs. The pheasants are released as soon as they are strong enough to be released into the wild, which is usually in 6 to 8 weeks. The minimum number of chicks to order is 20.

Why raise pheasants? Rearing pheasants is enjoyable, challenging and helps to teach youth responsibility. Released pheasants offer fall hunting opportunities that expand Wayne County's Tourist appeal. And lastly, many people enjoy seeing and hearing pheasants in their area. Call 331.8415.
