News from Pultneyville Historical Society The March 1 meeting of the Pultneyville Historical Society will take place at the Williamson American Legion Post 394 (38 Lake Avenue) at 7:30 p.m. Post Historian Orlo Plyter will present information regarding the local Post, as well as answering questions about artifacts, news articles and other memorabilia displayed at the Hall. Plyter, a veteran of World War II, is one of about 378 men and women from Williamson who left their community to serve their country. A life-long resident, he has also been a Trustee and Past Commander of the Post. The Post was formed in 1919 and met first in the local Armory, later moving to rooms in the B.W. Mohr annex and then to the Cheetham block. The present structure was formerly the home and office of Dr. A. C. Austin, who was a Civil War surgeon and owner of racehorses. The Legion is active in the affairs of the Town or Williamson. The list of civic, community, county, regional and national activities that the Williamson Post has been involved in is a testimony to the tenets found in the preamble to the charter of the Post. Currently, the monthly meetings of the Williamson Chamber of Commerce are held there, and the legion annually sponsors the Scholastic Oratorical Contest with Williamson Central School. Meetings of the Pultneyville Historical Society are free and open to the public. Following a brief business meeting, refreshments will be served. Copyright © 2000 |
