County organizes for coming year The year 2000 started like most for the Wayne County Board of Supervisors. Four new faces were at the meeting - the result of November's elections: (Arcadia) Joe DeSanto; (Galen) Leo Jenkins; (Huron) Lois Buckalew; and (Williamson) Tom Wetherell. There was just a little turbulence at this morning's Organizational Meeting - when it came time to appoint the County Attorney. Mark Alquist, who has held the position since January 1998, was not present. There was a brief Executive Session to discuss the personnel matter, and when regular session reconvened, a motion was made to insert his name into the blank space of the resolution. The resolution failed. Voting for Alquist were supervisors Dave Spickerman (Butler), Carm Pascarella (Rose) and Frank Guelli (Walworth). Arcadia Supervisor Joe DeSanto abstained. Monica Deyo (Marion) voted against Alquist, adding, "But I believe we handled it poorly." The next name to be offered was that of Assistant County Attorney Dan Wyner. Voting against him were supervisors Pascarella, Guelli and Jim Fabino (Lyons). DeSanto again abstained. Fabino had tried to offer yet another name - that of Asst. Public Defender John Gibbon, but Wyner received the appointment. Later in the meeting, his salary was set at $67,766. Alquist's 1999 salary had been $65,792. Supervisors designated the Wayne County Star and the Wayne County Times as official newspapers. Pascarella voted against the designations, and Monica Deyo said that she would expect the "courtesy" of the papers sending representatives to cover the board meetings. Majority Leader will again be Sodus Supervisor Donna Chittenden. Pascarella was named Minority Leader. For more organizational information (Standing Committees, the weighted vote, etc.) click here.
