Reds grapplers win Newark Tourney

The Newark wrestling team set a school record by placing 10 wrestlers on the championship podium on January 8 in the 26th annual Newark Wrestling Tournament.

Newark wrestlers competed in 14 of the 15 championship bouts. They also won their fifth straight tourney title. It was the fourth time the program had captured the same tourney five consecutive times.

The Reds outdistanced the competitors with a team total of 277 points. Pembroke was second with 93.5, East 90.5, York 72, Lyons 71, and in eighth place was Marion with 46.5.

eddie.jpg (3720 bytes)Sean Matthys started the Reds championship run by capturing the 96 lb. title, defeating Ryan Graham of Pembroke with a pin at 1:44.

Eddie Hammond (pictured) won the 103 crown by pinning Adam Galloway of Pembroke in a time of 1:59. Jim Premo won the 119 class by defeating Mike Garvin of Copenhagen by the score of 15-4. Premo had pinned his two previous opponents on his way to the finals.

Rob Allen (125) pinned Marion's Shawn Taylor in 3:33. Allen had pinned Brian VanSlyke of York to advance to the finals.

Jason DeFrain (145) defeated Brandon Clark of York, 8-2. DeFrain won by a technical fall over Marvin Diaz of East and defeated Justin Crain of Elmira 17-8 to reach the finals.

Shawn DeJohn (152) defeated David Briggs of Lyons by injury default. DeJohn won two previous times to reach the finals.

Eric Spratley (160) defeated Joe Suhr of Pembroke, 19-8. Spratley won his first two matches by a pin in 17 seconds and his second by a technical fall..

Senior Brad DeVelder (171) defeated Mike Jeffries of Avon, 7-5. DeVelder pinned his two previous opponents to reach the finals and capture the championship.

Jon Kelly won the 189 class by defeating Michael Payne of East High by the score of 5-2. Kelly pinned his two previous opponents to reach the finals.

Mike Wheeler (215) claimed the title by winning 6-4 decision over Matt Horton of Lyons. Wheeler had pinned his two previous two opponents.

Newark's Jason Durfee finished second, being pinned by John Franchi of Elmira. Durfee had won his two previous matches by pins.

clayb.jpg (8640 bytes)Clay Bouwens (pictured) placed second in the 130 class losing to Jonathan Aponte by a 14-5 decision. Bouwens won his first two matches by 6-4 and 10-2 scores.

Justin Rotach (135) placed second by winning his first two matches; he lost to T.J. Buonomo of East by a 10-4 decision.

Ken Holley (112) placed second losing, out to Jason Doyle of Copenhagen. Holley had pinned his two previous opponents.

In the 275 class, Marcus Colon (East High) defeated Phil Butterfield of York by a 2-0 decision. Jeremy DeFrain placed fourth at 275 lbs.
