The Holy Land

On February 8, the Rev. Cynthia Huling Hummel, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Lyons and her son, Bill, a freshman at the Lyons High School will be embarking on a trip of a lifetime.

The two will be leaving for the Holy Land on a Pilgrimage of Peace. The 10-day mission trip is being arranged through Kirkridge, an ecumenical retreat center located in Bangor, Pennsylvania. The Hummels will be part of an ecumenical group of 25 or so.

The trip will include dialogue with Jewish, Muslim and Christian peacemakers, Christian worship, visits to refuge camps, Jewish settlement and political institutions. They will travel through Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. They will be working three days at The Bethlehem Arab School for the Physically Handicapped and in two-day care centers doing painting, repair, general cleaning, etc. As part of the mission, they will be contributing to the purchase of building supplies for the school. They are also bringing school supplies (crayons, markers, stickers, etc.) for the children in the schools.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the building fund for the schools or wishing to donate school supplies for the children may contact the pastor at the church, 11 Queen Street in Lyons, of call 946.4723.
