Happenings By Carolyn Adriaansen (926-4436) Local congregations are invited to a retirement 'open house' for the Rev. and Mrs. Ondra and family, at the Palmyra Reformed Church fellowship hall, on Sunday, from 2-4 p.m. Conrad and Mimi Richards of Dormedy Hill Road had family visit them from out of town. Gathering were Sandy and Jeff Dick and their son Kevin, from Chili, and Hillary Richmond and her son Simon, from Saratoga Springs. The Zap-a-Snack Sale starts today. Remember...the girls basketball team can and bottle drive will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5. Have you thought any more about visiting the Ice Harvest at Millers Mills on Feb. 13? If you go on Saturday and stay overnight in Utica, it's only one-half hour away on Sunday morning. JANUARY 23, 1958: The newly renovated and enlarged First National Bank of Marion will hold open house this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mark and Tonya Cantwell have announced the birth of a daughter, Amanda Lynn, born on January 17, weighing 7 lbs. 6 oz. Happy grandmother is Joyce Cantwell, and happy great-grandmother is Ava Watson. Gerry VanKouwenberg is home after a stay in sunny Florida, where she visited with her daughter Susan. Congratulations to Marvin and Cheryl DeFisher on the January 17 birth of Jacob William, weighing in at 8 lbs. He was welcomed home by sister, Suzanna. Grandparents are Marvin and Loretta DeFisher, Doug and Johanna Williams. Lavina Decker has been a patient at the Newark ViaHealth hospital. Dear Dan: Snow and cold is the weather report! But the snowmobilers are having a wonderful time. 'It's better to sleep on what you intend to do, than to stay awake over what you have done.' Happy belated birthday to Hilda DeLue on January 27, from her friends. Christmas Program: It is with deep appreciation to each of you who took part in our Christmas Season of Sharing. Our 1999 Holiday Concert by the Marion School bands and Chorus performed an entertaining blend of traditional and contemporary holiday songs. It was an enjoyable evening. Rev. Dr. Daniel Meyer of the United Church explained the program, and the free will donation. Over 100 Poinsettias were delivered to Senior Citizens, shut-ins and patients in hospitals and nursing homes. We were able to send gift certificates to 65 families, including 130 children. Approximately 1400 food items were collected by the annual food drive and donated by grades 7 through 12 making it possible for 72 families to receive food baskets. Dan McClure and his woodworking class made and donated many wooden toys. Gifts for children and Senior Citizens were donated and delivered with the food baskets. School sports: The girls basketball team lost 47-41 to Clyde-Savannah on Jan. 18. JV girls lost 41-39 to Clyde-Savannah. Lisa Colling led Marion with nine points, while Katie Lewis and Becky Plyter each scored seven. Angela Green pulled down 17 rebounds and scored four points. Boys basketball team defeated Red Creek 60-50. Ted Kearns led all scorers with 17 points and Merle Salisbury had eight rebounds. Boys B team won 37-17 in their first game against Red Creek.
