Wayne County goes smokefree
By Donna Comella

The new smoking law was expected to pass this morning, and it did. By January 1, 2002, all places where people gather in Wayne County will be smoke free, except bars and taverns.

The Board of Supervisors cast ballots after a brief public hearing. It was the second time a public hearing was held on the law, because the board changed the date the law would go into effect.

With a weighted vote based on his or her town's population, supervisors tallied up at 3,012 for the law and 987 against. A 2000 majority is required.

The vote wasn't dictated by party lines, but did seem to be east against west. The six supervisors who voted against the law included Chairman of the Board Marv Decker from Wolcott, Jim Fabino (Lyons), Dave Spickerman (Butler), Leo Jenkins (Galen), Lois Buckalew (Huron), and Carm Pascarella (Rose).

Those approving the law were Arcadia's Joe DeSanto, Monica Deyo (Marion), William Eddy (Macedon), Dave Lyon (Palmyra), Roy Herrmann (Ontario), Donna Chittenden (Sodus), Don Colvin (Savannah), Tom Wetherell (Williamson), and Frank Guelli (Walworth).

Guelli, who has taken the lead in making the law a reality, passed out bubble gum cigars following the vote.
