Cops vs. Firemen this Sunday
By Donna Comella

Paul Staples, Richard Bogan, Joe Colasurdo, Eddie DeMarsh, Juan Ortiz, Dick Colacino and Mike VelteThe Newark Volunteer Fire Department takes on the Newark Police Benevolent Association this Sunday for a second annual benefit softball game. The Colburn Park event begins at 7 p.m.

Dick Colacino said that last year, the firefighters gave the police force a good trouncing. And although he couldn't recall the exact numbers, he said the fire dept.'s runs looked more like a 'basketball score.'

Colacino did admit to bribing Umpire Eddie DeMarsh with a cup of coffee or two last year, so that calls would go in the favor of the firefighters. (And as you can see here, the Police Chief is offering him some glasses.) Umpire Paul Staples says, however, that he cannot be bribed. DeMarsh and Staples have years of experience as umpires, lending their services to the Little League, P.A.L. and Legion games. They will be joined on the field by umpire John Salone, Mayor of Lyons.

Ticket cost is $5/adult; $3/ages11-16; and children 10 & under free. The proceeds of the game are split equally between the fire dept. and the Benevolent Association. Door prizes and gift certificates have been donated by many area merchants.
