All enjoyed the Alloway Picnic

Eighty residents and friends of Alloway gathered Sunday afternoon, July 9, at the home of Amelia Engels for the community picnic.

Alloway Picnic The annual Alloway picnic is a tradition dating to the early years of the 20th century.

Earl Buchanan acted as Master of Ceremonies. Will Fischer, son of Bill Fischer and Camille Santangelo, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Buchanan led singing 'God Bless America.' The Rev. Cynthia Hummel, pastor of Lyons Presbyterian Church, gave the invocation.

David Briggs and Michelle Galusha of Lyons Central School Class of 2000 had been presented Alloway Awards. These are presented in memory of William Mess, a resident who gave his life in service of his country during the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, late in 1944.

Ken and Dorann Cole of Sohn-Alloway Road were crowned Peppermint King and Queen. Mary Long, daughter of Shawn and Tonia Long, was crowned Alloway Peppermint Princess. The Coles and Mary Long rode in the Lyons Peppermint Parade.

Musical entertainment was provided by Tim Morrell and his father, Eugene.

Alloway is located on Route 14, two miles south of Lyons. Its outstanding historical buildings are a grist mill, a portion of which dates to 1794, and the only octagon cobblestone blacksmith shop in the world.
