Newark cops will patrol Sodus Point
By John Zornow

An agreement was reached by the village boards of Newark and Sodus Point for Newark to supply police protection for the resort community on Sodus Bay.

Newark Mayor Fred Pirelli called the plan a neighborly gesture and stressed that it would be 'revenue neutral' for Newark. According to Pirelli, all expenses for labor and equipment would be reimbursed by Sodus Point. In addition, Newark police officers assigned to the 'Point' will be those who volunteer on an overtime basis. The Newark Village Board voted 3-1 at their July 18 meeting to lend a hand to Sodus Point.

Trustee Peter Blandino, uncomfortable about insurance liability issues, cast the 'no' vote. Trustee John Palermo was absent from the meeting.

The village of Sodus Point has been without a police department for several years due to budget constraints, and has depended upon coverage by the State Police and the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. Help from Newark will enable the little village to deal with problems that the resort community faces in the summer months. Sodus Point recently enacted a curfew and is trying to deal with noise problems, through a new noise ordinance to be voted on soon.

The Village of Sodus has also agreed to be a part of this cooperative effort and will supply manpower and a patrol car as well.
