Renaissance Festival opens this weekend

The 24th annual Sterling Renaissance Festival offers a trip back in time to Elizabethan England. This year's festival runs from July 1 to Aug. 13, Saturdays and Sundays only.

More than 500 professional actors and stagehands bring the town of Warwick, England, to life through stage and street performances, authentic jousting, parades, games, music and more. Nine outdoor stages provide a full day of entertainment, including a production of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet.' Live music, dance and jousting are also featured.

More than 50 artisans will be displaying their handiwork. Included are hand-blown glass, leatherwork, bookbinding, calligraphy, historic wax seals, woodwork, replica prints, jewelry, etc.

The festival prides itself as a family event, and there's plenty to do for the kids. Storytelling, puppet shows, and games such as pillow fighting, archery and nine pins will keep the younger set occupied.

The 35-acre festival site is at 15431 Farden Road, Sterling, near Lake Ontario. (Located in Cayuga County. From Wayne County, head east on Route 104 to Route 104a. Follow signs.) The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. rain or shine. Pets are not allowed. Advance tickets are $12.50 for adults and $5.99 for children 6 to 12 years old; children 5 and under are free.

Two-day and season passes are available, as are group rates for 20 or more adults.
