Wayne County briefs
By Donna Comella

The Wayne County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday morning in the second floor courtroom of the old County Courthouse. The smell of fresh paint and newly-installed carpeting greeted visitors, which included Newark High Participation in Government students.

Lyons Supervisor Jim Fabino, who underwent a recent surgery and hospitalization, was absent. Lyons Town Councilman Earl Buchanan sat in Fabino's seat, and although he is Deputy Supervisor for the town, he is not allowed to vote on County matters.

Supervisors attended to routine business, which included:

- Setting the date for the public auction of properties acquired by delinquent taxes. The auction will take place at the courthouse on April 19 at 7 p.m.

- Authorizing the purchase of several items for the Courthouse Renovation Project, including new draperies ($9,700) for the old courtroom (Supervisors' Chambers). Another resolution authorized new carpeting for the Supervisors' first-floor conference room at a cost of $2997. The old courthouse has been in use since 1854 and has been undergoing renovations since the new Hall of Justice opened in 1997.

- Approving a two-year contract with Data Serve, Inc. to develop and maintain a web site for Wayne County Public Health. The cost is not to exceed $2,500 per year.

- Authorizing a pay telephone to be installed at the County Health Facility on Nye Rd., Lyons.

- Setting up the groundwork for a 20-year loan from the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assist the Erie Canal Cultural Center in Lyons. The ECCC will pay back to the County a $2.45 million mortgage on the old Hammett property. Palmyra Supervisor Dave Lyons voted against all five resolutions that pertained to the loan.

- Approving the appointment of Dale Groover of Newark, as a member of the Regional Fish and Wildlife management Board.
