Newark seeks alumni band members
For the second year in a row, K-1 2 Music Supervisor David Schwind wants to make the final band concert of the year especially meaningful. So, he's inviting NHS graduates, who played in band during their high school days, to perform one number with his wind ensemble at the 7:30 p.m. concert in the Newark High auditorium on May 31. The concert will also feature the NHS concert band directed by music teacher Mike Ciranni. 'We did this last year and it was a great experience for not only the alumni, but for myself and the students in the wind ensemble,' Schwind said. He said 12 former students participated. 'We had people play who had graduated the year before or within the last five to eight years, but we also had a person who had been out of school for 50 years,' Schwind said excitedly. 'It was wonderful,' he continued. 'I'd like to see a lot more people who used to play an instrument at NHS dust off their instruments and come back and play with us at our final concert.' Schwind said he can provide an instrument for anyone who doesn't have one. 'Don't let not having an instrument stop you,' he said., Anyone wishing to participate should call him at 332.3200, ext. 2255. Folks who cannot call during school hours can do so in the evening. They should leave a message along with their daytime and evening telephone number and Schwind will get back to them. Those who want to play with the ensemble at the concert will also be asked to attend two, one-hour evening rehearsals with the ensemble. More details will be available by calling Schwind. The final concert will also be special, Schwind said, because all senior band members will be individually recognized for their dedication and acheivements.
