Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Finally, it's May and the warmer weather (we've been waiting so long for) is here! My daughter has a field trip today and the note from the teacher said to dress appropriately. Lately, it's hard to know what that means. Thankfully, the weather promises to be a warm and sunny 81 degrees.

Speaking of warm weather, Eileen Hooper has begun her new job at Epcot in Florida. She is working in the wig and make up room and enjoying herself thoroughly. Eileen's family took her Mom to Epcot to see the changed flower gardens. Brian is going to Wonder Works for a banquet this weekend. One of his teachers entered him in a contest and he won first prize. Congratulations, Brian. The students in Florida only have two more weeks of school. (They also go back earlier than our students do.)

Happy May birthdays to Susan Hooper on May 8; Joey O'Connell on May 1, and Steve Lowenguth.

The Getting To Know Your Water Shed spring conference will be held Thursday at Sodus Point. The cost for registration is $12 and includes refreshments, lunch and handouts. To register, call 315.946.4136. Bring a friend - there will be great door prizes.

Diane Phillips just returned from a wonderful trip to LA to visit her son. She had the opportunity to meet many celebrities while she was there. The Bacon family went during spring break to Florida to enjoy the warm sunshine and the rides at Disney. Is everyone well rested? (Some people are smart and go South on vacation, unlike us who travel North.)

arneys marina The Wallington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be having an All-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfast on Mother's Day, May 14 from 8 to noon.

The Bog-N-Grog will be at the Wallington Firemen's Field on Sunday, May 21 from noon until 5 p.m. Mark your calendars.

Helen Phillips just returned from visiting her new granddaughter, Jessica, son David, daughter-in law Jenny and grandson, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She had a great visit and loved their new home. (Did you see her driving through town barely able to see out the back window because of all the presents she was taking with her?)

This weekend, Donny Lennox's family is taking him to see a Yankee game in New York City. Sounds like fun.

Unfortunately the Car Wash that was planned by the Scouts for a few weekends ago was rained out. They are planning another one and will let me know the new date.

DeFisher's Greenhouse will be opening Saturday (May 6) at 8 a.m. Char says they have plenty of gifts for Mother's Day. There is a large selection of hanging baskets, perennials, Jackson and Perkins Roses and annual plants. Everything looks great. It has been a good growing season. (I used to spend a lot of time at DeFisher's. In fact, many things in my garden now were purchased there.)

Graduation is coming up on May 13 for two former Sodus Point residents - Mary Beth Boudrez and Jason Stevens. Congratulations to both of them. (Now, Mary Beth, won't you miss school just a little?) It's off to a new career. How exciting for them.

The Old Sodus Point Light House is open for the season. There is a new exhibit that focuses on summers from long ago - 1900. The Sunday concert series will begin in July.

Don't forget about the Sodus Rotary Chicken BBQ tomorrow (Saturday) from 4:30 to 7; and on Sunday, the Sodus Crop walk at l:30; and the Sunday Open house at the Humane Societyfrom ll a.m. to 3.

If you're going to be going away for the weekend (or a few days), Joy Secor and Sadie Secor have a Doggy Pet Sitting business. Call 315.589.9684.

cold beach The Williamson Library will have Lap Sit Storytime for children ages l8 months to 3 years old and their adult partners, Monday mornings at l0:30, May 1 to May 22. Registration is required.

And speaking of the Williamson Library, the Friends of the Library are holding a month-long membership drive; AND the Book Sale will be held May 11 -13. Don't miss it - there are always great bargains.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me information to add to the column and for the kind notes of encouragement. It is deeply appreciated. If you or anyone you know has fun information to add, please e-mail me at
