Newark Canal banks need help

A community-wide effort is planned to spruce up the southside canal bank through Newark.

The banks of the Erie Canal from Cannery Row Mall on West Union St. to Newcut Industries on East Union are targeted for this project on Saturday, May 20.

Mark Peake, Zoning and Code Enforcement officer for the Village of Newark, is coordinating the joint efforts between the village and the NYS Canal Corp. Letters have been sent out to all residences and businesses along this section of the canal.

Boy and Girl Scouts, schools, church youth groups and service clubs are asked to join the efforts. Village and state crews will be on hand to assist, and refreshments are planned.
