Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Another beautiful week - much as we don't like it, the rainy ones have to come, too. I found that when I let Sarah the Boxer out on her line, she fiddles quite a bit before she comes in. Not so during the thunder and lightning. It's amazing how fast she can get back into the house when the spirit moves her. Maybe I should tape that sound. The kids move faster, too.

Did you ever wonder what you would do if your pet needed emergency medical care? Dogs are always swallowing little things - from the kids' toys to the ends of their bones. There is a New First Aid course for pets. The classes are limited to 12, so register soon.

Granny Goodstory is, this week as always, busy. If she's not helping to build a House for Habitat, she's busy doing other things, such as being at the Lilac Festival. Granny will be carrying a handmade basket and passing out information on how you can take classes and make one as well. You'll know her because she is wearing a bonnet and has a dress with (you guessed it) lilacs on it. She may be telling stories, but one thing is for certain, she will be shaking thumbs with a lot of people.

Ralph Everdyke's trip back to Newark from Florida went well. Everything was in his favor - no accidents and clear skies all the way. Nice to have you back, Ralph. I see you brought some of the warm air and sunshine back with you. Thanks?

Congratulations to all the Graduates. Mary Beth Boudrez can barely sit still when shes typing to me. Diane DelPapa's son, Alex, will be graduating from High School on June 2. He achieved North Carolina Scholar status for good grades and sports. Great job, Alex! While we are waiting for someone in the South to send us a warm breeze, Diane asks that we send her a cool New York one.

The Wayne County Council for the Arts in Lyons is doing a RAKU Pottery workshop. The handforming class will be Wednesday, May 24 at 7 p.m. with the glazing and firing at l0 a.m. on pottery Saturday June 17. $40 for WCCA members and $45 for non-members. The cost covers the class, materials and firing. Please call Jackie at the Arts Council 946.5078 to sign up. Space is limited.

Speaking of Pottery, I found a picture of Lukacs pottery shop in Sodus Point. We took the kids on a field trip there years ago.

Pine Hill Orchards will be having a Square Dance Saturday, May 22 from 8 to -midnight. Square dancing is a lot of fun. I get a little confused, but people in the group are always happy to help out. Pine Hill Orchards has hard and soft ice cream and yogurt for those warm summery days. They are open Monday Saturday from 7 till dusk and closed on Sundays.

Next Tuesday, May 16 Carol Garland's daughter will be giving a presentation on her Peace Corps experiences in Tanzania, West Africa at 6:30 at the Sodus Library. Shortly after that, she will be leaving for Colorado to begin grad school at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Also at the Sodus Library on Thursday, May l8, there will be another Books Sandwiched in program. This time, you'll take a Tour of the SouthWest with Chris Davis.

Happy Birthday wishes to John Abbey, who was seen at a Chinese Restaurant with his wife, Michelle. (John, what did that fortune say?)

The Rummage Sale is on today and tomorrow at the United Third Methodist Church in Sodus. The church, on the corner of Main and Belden, is open today until 6, then tomorrow is Bag Day, 9 a.m. to noon.

Don't forget Mother's Day is this weekend. The Wallington Fire Departments Ladies Auxiliary will be having an All-you-can-eat pancake breakfast on Mother's Day from 8 to noon. And the Fairville Fire Department will host its annual Mother's Day Chicken Barbecue on Sunday at the Fire Hall, Rt. 88 North. Serving will begin at ll a.m. and will continue until sold out. (If you plan really well, you won't have to cook a single meal on Sunday.)

Tomorrow night (Sat., May 13) the Sodus Point Fire Department will be hosting a dinner. Doors will open at 3 and dinner will be at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, May 17, at the Williamson Library there will be a presentation at noon by the Town Historian Chet Peters. Please call the library for lunch reservations by closing time on Monday.

The Williamson Library used to have really fun book boxes filled with toys and books. Now, they have Book Packs - backpacks that are convenient and easy to carry. What a great idea! Lighter, easier and they are still filled with the same fun things.

backpacks On Monday, May 15 or Tuesday, May 16, the Kraft Shack will be making a Trellis Pot Arrangement. The classes will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. $23 will include all. Those wishing to attend will be making a really nice project which includes a clay pot overflowing with flowers, birds, and a butterfly, with a 24-inch tall garden trellis decorated with ivy.

The next Sodus Chamber of Commerce meeting is scheduled for June 1 and will be held at Nick's Family Restaurant at 6 p.m. Members of the Sodus Chamber of Commerce include: Mary Jane Mumby, Janie Hyland, Mary Piekunka, Ernie Piekunka, Mary Cook, Bill Stirling, Martin Seppler, Ray Seppler, John Catlin, Richard Ransley, Nancy Ransley, and Jim Hopkins.
